“I am honored and privileged to be attending an institution with such a strong and supportive network of alumni. I am greatly impressed by the work of The Texas Exes to make opportunities available to students like myself…” Past Texas Exes Scholarship Recipient

Since it was organized in 1885, one of the Texas Exes Association's main purposes has been to provide scholarships for current and future students. Chapter scholarships benefit entering freshmen or transfer students who are new to the University, and they are selected by Texas Exes from their own communities. The Eyes of Texas Annual Giving Fund provides $500 matching gifts to chartered Texas Exes chapters that raise money for these scholarships. Dedicated Scholarships have been established by loyal alumni, friends, and students of The University of Texas as memorials and in recognition of excellence. The Texas Exes present the Texas Excellence Awards for Scholarship and Leadership to top high school scholar/leaders in the state to attend the University and to become part of its proud tradition. For the 2002 school year, The Texas Exes administered more than $2.45 million to more than 800 students.

Have you wondered where the proceeds from the Texas Exes NY Chapter-sponsored events go?

In addition to supporting operations and our general chapter scholarship fund -- which provides scholarships to New York City-area high school students pursuing their education at The University of Texas, the Texas Exes NY Chapter also participates in the Long-Jamail Scholarship Endowment Challenge through our parent organization, The Texas Exes®.

A few years ago, the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals deemed it unconstitutional to recruit or reward students based on their ethnicity. In response to this action, the Texas Leader Scholarship Program was established to attract and retain qualified minority students. Though this ruling has been overturned, the need for attracting and retaining qualified minority students to UT Austin remains. Therefore, Joe and Terry Long offered a $1 million challenge, met by Joe and Lee Jamail with an additional $1 million, to Texas Exes Chapters, individuals, and corporations. Under this challenge, new chapter endowments established under this program (until the matching monies are totally committed) will receive one-to-one matching.

The Texas Exes NY Chapter has pledged to raise $15,000 over three years for this endowment. After being matched by the Program (first scholarship awards expected for 2006-07 academic year), the chapter’s new $30,000 scholarship endowment will ensure four years of support at UT-Austin for Black or Hispanic students with financial need who are entering as freshmen – in perpetuity!

In addition to supporting this Endowment by attending Chapter events, you can also make a tax-deductible donation to the chapter’s general OR the Long-Jamail Challenge Grant scholarship. If your company offers a matching donation policy, you can make a significant contribution to providing an opportunity for higher education to a deserving student.
